  • STONEHENGE

    Stonehenge, a world Heritage Site and the best known prehistoric monument in Europe, has over one million visitors per year. In order to reduce the site’s impact on the environment the visitor facilities use innovative technology in recycling and to reduce freshwater use.

HOW DOES STONEHENGE ADVANCE THE UN GLOBAL GOALS?

Stonehenge adheres to SDG 6: Clean Water & Sanitation. The site’s Visitor Centre is not connected to a mains water supply; instead water is drawn from a the natural aquifer via a borehole. To preserve this precious natural resource the facilities at the visitor centre include innovative waterless urinals, vacuum toilet systems, waste water is recycled for toilet flushing and smart technology is employed to control the quantity of soap and water dispensed during hand washing.

  • THE ROMAN BATHS

    The Roman Baths, one of the best-preserved Roman remains in the world, is visited by thousands of school children every year. Through its education programmes and projects, The Roman Baths works to increase the understanding, education, and enjoyment of schoolchildren and visitors to the significant heritage of the ancient site and the city of Bath.

HOW DOES THE ROMAN BATHS ADVANCE THE UN GLOBAL GOALS?

The Roman Baths adhere to SDG 4: Quality Education through its school educational programme which actively supports local schools to learn about the cultural heritage of the region. The opening of a new Clore Learning Centre, scheduled to open later in 2021, will further expand the educational capacity and capability of the site, allowing students hands on education in state-of-the-art facilities.

Bath and North East Somerset Council are also due to open a free to enter World Heritage Centre in the city in 2021. The Centre will act as a hub for local residents and visitors to learn about and explore Bath’s rich history and heritage before heading into the city to discover the historical sites.

  • CANTERBURY CATHEDRAL

HOW DOES CANTERBURY CATHEDRAL ADVANCE THE UN GLOBAL GOALS?

Canterbury Cathedral advances SDG 4: Quality Education through its stonemason and stained glass apprenticeship schemes as well as its outreach programme for schools and community groups targeting high deprivation areas local to the Cathedral such as Swale, Shepway and Thanet. The Cathedral also advances 11: Sustainable cities and communities experience as it safeguards traditional stone masonry and stained glass practices, educating visitors on traditional techniques in both tours and workshops. The stained glass studios not only work on the Cathedral but also all over the UK and abroad on sustainable conservation projects and the Cathedral employs over 19 stonemasons to work on repairs. Every visit helps to support the Cathedral, its restoration projects and the survival of traditional craftmanship.
