Keep calm and enjoy a relaxing city break

As a bustling and exciting city with so much to see and do, London is naturally associated with a fast-paced lifestyle and busy atmosphere. Yet, it is possible to experience this thriving, must-see location in a more relaxed manner.

Whether you want to see Westminster Abbey and other historic attractions or stroll in one of London’s Royal Parks, there are many ways to explore the capital without feeling hurried or stressed by the crowds, noise, and traffic jams.

This article explores how to enjoy a calmer London city break and sightseeing without feeling rushed or as if you’ve missed out.

Escape to a park or garden

While it might not be common knowledge, London is home to 3,000 parks and 20% green spaces that provide perfect retreats for groups of shoppers, commuters, and crowds. There are eight Royal Parks, all with their own charm, cafes, and unique attractions. Hyde Park on the Serpentine Lake offers pedal boat hire, while Regent’s Park boasts the beautiful Queen Mary’s Gardens and is home to London’s largest collection of roses. Richmond Park, meanwhile, is a larger, serene parkland where wild deer roam free.

For a more intimate experience, discover some of London’s hidden garden gems. The Chelsea Physic Garden, Britain’s oldest botanic garden, offers a tranquil oasis in the heart of Chelsea. Founded in 1673, it houses a unique collection of 5,000 different edible, medicinal, and historical plants. In Holland Park, you’ll find the Kyoto Garden, a Japanese-style landscape perfect for quiet contemplation. On a grander scale, Kew Gardens boasts the iconic Palm House and has diverse plant collections from around the world.

Cruise the River Thames

The River Thames offers a unique perspective of London’s landmarks while providing a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle. Consider taking a river boat tour along the Thames, where you can admire iconic sights, including Tower Bridge, the Houses of Parliament, and the iconic London Eye. Cruises include interesting commentary so you can learn all about London’s landmark buildings and relax.

If you love relaxing by or even in the water, it’s possible to go swimming in the Thames and the Ponds in Hampstead Heath are natural pools. Their Men’s, Ladies’, and Mixed Ponds provide a refreshing and invigorating escape from the city, especially in the summer.

Organise away days and other city breaks

Arguably the simplest way to escape London is to literally organise a great day trip away from the city. Even if you only have a day to spare, you can plan to go somewhere really special or further afield for a real change of scenery. If you are craving the calm that only a beach trip provides, London is not far from pretty seaside towns and sandy beaches in nearby coastal locations such as Dorset and Sussex.

If you have a few extra days, it’s easy to arrange a train journey to other celebrated places and cities across the UK, including Oxford, Bath, Edinburgh, Liverpool, and the picturesque Lake District. If you like heritage and royalty, Windsor has the oldest and largest occupied British Castle and while here, you can enjoy a leisurely stroll through Windsor Great Park.

Discover the scenic heights of the capital

For a different but still relaxing perspective of the capital, you can find some tranquil and elevated spots with panoramic views in serene settings. The London Eye, standing tall on the South Bank of the Thames, provides a unique vantage point for admiring London’s skyline. Consider booking a private capsule for a more tranquil experience and uninterrupted views of well-known landmarks, such as Big Ben and Buckingham Palace, for a relaxed tour of The King’s Gallery and State Rooms.

However, if you prefer the dizzying heights of modernity, visit the Sky Garden and enjoy its lush indoor garden offers free entry, though booking in advance is recommended. As you wander through the expertly landscaped greenery, you’ll be treated to 360-degree views of London. The space includes observation decks and an open-air terrace, providing ample opportunity for quiet contemplation amidst the urban jungle.

Find solace in a quiet church or cathedral

London’s historic churches and cathedrals are not only architecturally beautiful but are calming and quiet places for quiet reflection. Arguably the quietest places to discover, churches are, by nature, free from noise. From crypts and tombs to unknown soldiers and hidden chambers, London has 39 churches with a wealth of secret and often fascinating stories and sights inside waiting to be discovered.

For religious architecture, though, perhaps the most famous is St Paul’s Cathedral with its iconic dome which is a masterpiece of British architecture. You can climb the 259 steps to the Whispering Gallery for a unique acoustic experience too. Meanwhile, another serene, must-see, and visually striking building is Westminster Abbey, London’s famous Gothic church with over a thousand years of history and wonderful chapels.

Relax in a pampering spa

Indulge in some pampering at London’s luxurious spas, where you can truly escape the hustle and bustle of city life. Without realising it, London has a rich selection of spas and rooftop pools inviting visitors to pamper themselves in the heart of this often hectic capital. Corinthia is a luxurious choice with a chic sanctuary of holistic wellness treatments. This opulent spa features a thermal floor with a sauna, an ice fountain, and heated loungers.

Likewise, you’ll find multiple hotels have private pools and state-of-the-art gyms with wellness treatments, yoga or meditation classes, and massages ranging from the traditional to the exotic. Naturally, spas, pools and hotel saunas are the perfect serene retreat taking you worlds away from the urban buzz just outside.

While London is renowned for having its own unique energy and plenty of excitement by day or night, there are opportunities for a peaceful and rejuvenating break. By combining your visit to the capital with a picnic in a park or a peaceful river cruise, you can still discover the many sides and sights of this incredible capital.
