But it\u2019s been adored by monarchs throughout the past 1,000 years, including Queen Elizabeth II, Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth I, and King George III, who famously took a lot of interest in the welfare of his nearby subjects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other monarchs have been more interested in sprucing up the house itself than paying attention to their neighbours. Henry VIII purportedly spent the equivalent of nearly \u00a3300 million on a revamp, and George IV later followed suit by spending over \u00a3800 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The castle served as inspiration for a royal name change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Up until WWI, our royal family\u2019s surname was Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, which is a German dynasty. It endured serious blazes in 1296 and 1853. However, the most damaging fire occurred in 1992, thought to have been caused by a spotlight setting a curtain alight. It took 15 hours, 200 firefighters and 1.5 million gallons of water to get the fire under control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The royals used Windsor Castle as a safehouse during WWII<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When Britain was being bombed <a href=\"https:\/\/evanevanstours.com\/experiences\/small-group-experiences\/wartime-london-small-group-experience\/\">during WWII<\/a>, most people took refuge in underground shelters.
