Stonehenge, as it would come to be known, has been a mystery ever since. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whoever built it left no written record and few clues behind for us to piece together this ancient puzzle. But before we go into more details, take a look at our fascinating <a href=\"https:\/\/evanevanstours.com\/tours\/stonehenge-tours\/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=strange_stonehenge_theories\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stonehenge Tours<\/a> departing from London to discover this mysterious site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It goes without saying that the mystery and intrigue surrounding Stonehenge have generated some interesting theories over the centuries regarding its construction, the identity of its builders, and the purpose behind its construction &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/evanevanstours.com\/blog\/why-was-stonehenge-built\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">some more plausible than others<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, we&#8217;re not interested in science and research in this article &#8211; <strong>let&#8217;s go ahead and look at the most outlandish theories behind Stonehenge:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A giant built it<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It was an ancient team-building exercise<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It was an ancient health spa<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aliens did it<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It was the Druids<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It&#8217;s a Neolithic sex symbol<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>We tell you more below!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A giant built it<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/a\/a4\/BLEgerton3028Fol30rStonehengeCropped.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:650px;height:684px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The oldest known depiction of Stonehenge, c.12th-century AD<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Early historians were heavily influenced by folktales to explain the unexplainable. The particular legend tied to Stonehenge claims that the fictional wizard of Arthurian legend, Merlin, had a giant build the structure for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why exactly the giant agreed, or what was in it for him, isn&#8217;t clear. As the theory goes, the bluestones at the centre of Stonehenge were venerated for their healing and magical properties as they came from a site in Wales in close proximity to traditional healing springs. People travelled from miles around to chip parts of the bluestone off to make amulets to carry around with them. Our only question: <em>why couldn&#8217;t they go to the stones?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Aliens did it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>No conspiracy list would be complete without the inclusion of aliens at some point. As it goes, Aliens are alleged to have provided the technology to build Stonehenge. Ok, let&#8217;s carry on. In the 17th century, John Aubrey and William Stukeley declared Stonehenge the work of Druids, who constructed it as a temple to their false idols.
