The Union Explained&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I finished university, I went on a celebratory travelling trip around Asia with a few of my roommates. We met so many interesting people from all over the world, but there was one thing many seemed to have in common.<br><br>People would ask us where we\u2019re from. I\u2019d say \u201cNorth Wales\u201d. So let\u2019s clear it up once and for all:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The United Kingdom<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The &#8216;United Kingdom&#8217; refers to a political union between, <em>England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland<\/em>. Although the UK is a fully independent sovereign state, the 4 nations that make it up are also countries in their own right and have a certain extent of autonomy.  <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.historic-uk.com\/assets\/Images\/unitedkingdom.png?1390903158\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:243px;height:281px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The United Kingdom (red) and the Republic of Ireland (Grey)<br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although all 4 countries are bound to the Crown and united, each country has its own identity and are often considered separate in the minds of locals. There are even regional languages like Welsh and Gaelic, though English is spoken throughout.<br><br>From 1801 to 1922, the United Kingdom included the whole of Ireland, but now only includes Northern Ireland. The Republic of Ireland operates as a sovereign state of its own, although it\u2019s physically close to the UK. The Isle of Man and the Channel Island (Jersey and Guernsey) are what we call \u2018Crown Dependencies\u2019 but are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">part of the UK.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Great Britain <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;Great Britain&#8217; is the collective name for the islands that make up England, Scotland, Wales,<\/span> and their islands. It comes from the political union of the three kingdoms,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which was made in 1707. Northern Ireland <strong>isn\u2019t<\/strong> part of Great Britain.<br><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.historic-uk.com\/assets\/Images\/greatbritain.png?1390903158\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:278px;height:322px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Great Britain (red) and Ireland (grey)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wondering where the name comes from? We\u2019re not just bigheaded! It\u2019s said that \u2018Great\u2019 was stuck on the front of \u2018Britain\u2019 (the Roman word Britannia) to distinguish Britain from its similar-sounding neighbour, Brittany, in Northern France.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The British Isles <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is purely a geographical term that refers to the entire island of Great Britain <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ireland. This one includes the Republic of Ireland too, along with the 5,000 small islands that are scattered around our coastlines.<br><br><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.historic-uk.com\/assets\/Images\/britishisles.png?1390903158\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:334px;height:432px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The British Isles (red) and mainland Europe (Green)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the Republic of Ireland is technically part of the British Isles, the people who live there are not British<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; in fact, they\u2019d probably be a little peeved if you called them so!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The countries of the UK<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019d say that one of the United Kingdom\u2019s greatest strengths is its diversity &#8211; we\u2019re bursting with regional pride. You could come on holiday here for just 2 or 3 weeks and manage to soak up 4 different cultures, hear 3 different languages and heaps of striking regional accents without travelling far.<br><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/P0soy.png?1?8218\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:305px;height:442px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">England<br><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/thumb\/b\/be\/Flag_of_England.svg\/1280px-Flag_of_England.svg.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"width:347px;height:208px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">England is the largest and southernmost country of the UK, home to around 84% of the UK\u2019s population. Here, you\u2019ll find some of the UK\u2019s most bustling cities. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/evanevanstours.com\/tours\/london-tours\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">London<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds are all within a few hours&#8217; drive of each other, each bursting with their unique culture and history.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are heaps of beautiful countryside, including the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/evanevanstours.com\/tours\/rail-tours-from-london\/the-lake-district-with-afternoon-tea-cruise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Lake District<\/a> and Peak District, as well as ancient historic sites at every turn, the most notable of which is <a href=\"https:\/\/evanevanstours.com\/tours\/stonehenge-tours\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stonehenge<\/a>, which should be on your bucket list. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wales<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/evanevanstours.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Flag_of_Wales.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"255\" height=\"153\" src=\"https:\/\/evanevanstours.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Flag_of_Wales.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6443\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.6666666666666667;width:267px;height:auto\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019d call Wales the unsung gem of the UK &#8211; it may be small, but it\u2019s got lots on offer. Wales is most famed for its amazing landscapes and mountainous areas, such as Snowdonia National Park, the scenic, rugged coast, and the 870-mile path covering every inch of its coastline.<br><br>And, of course, let\u2019s not forget that Wales has its own language &#8211; Welsh &#8211; which is still widely spoken today. It covers around a third of the total UK landmass, roughly divided into three areas &#8211; the Lowlands with its thick woodlands, the Highlands and its towering mountains and lochs, and the islands and their peaceful, quiet, and far-reaching sea views.<br><br>The highest point in Scotland, and the whole of the British Isles for that matter, is Ben Nevis, which reaches 4,418ft at its peak &#8211; a great challenge for hikers. The Giant Causeway is Northern Ireland\u2019s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, an area of around 40,000 basalt columns left by volcanic eruptions 60 million years ago and is well worth the trip alone.<br><br>Drive the incredible Causeway Coastal Route around the Atlantic Ocean and stop at one of many quaint villages for the night to sip on a Guinness. And if it\u2019s a city you\u2019re after, Northern Ireland has that too. Belfast\u2019s Victorian buildings and industrial heritage hark at its interesting past, but the buzz of Irish nightlife and impressive restaurant scene draws visitors in today.<br><br>Wherever you choose to visit in the UK, you\u2019re bound to have an amazing time.
